The Ranchers barn and coop upgrade guide — costs and capacity
Official Wiki barn and coop costs, plus the 0.8.10.842 fix for animals moving under river-built barns or coops. Live costs still need verification.
Update 0.8.10.842 fixes animals moving underneath barns or coops built over rivers. The pre-Early-Access Wiki still lists barn and coop costs and capacity; verify every value in the current build.

Version warning: these exact figures come from official Wiki pages last updated between March 2023 and July 2024, before the July 2026 Early Access launch. They are useful planning references, not current-build test results. Confirm the in-game blueprint panel before spending resources.
Current Early Access check: river placement
The official 0.8.10.842 notes (August 21 Steam post, rechecked August 23) fix animals that could move underneath barns or coops built over rivers. Update to 0.8.10.842 or later before treating a missing animal under a river-built barn or coop as a still-open bug. The same post does not change Wiki coin costs, housing numbers or kit-slot counts.
Related animal-association fixes belong on the breeding and quality guide.
Barn upgrade table
The pre-Early-Access official Wiki documents three barn tiers. All accept cows, bulls and goats and support both the Auto-Feeding Kit and Air Conditioning Kit.
| Stat | Barn | Big Barn | Deluxe Barn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coin cost | 84,000 | 120,000 | 240,000 |
| Materials | 20 Wood, 15 Rock, 15 Hay | 40 Wood, 25 Rock, 15 Hay | 70 Wood, 50 Rock, 15 Hay |
| Build steps | 10 | 20 | 30 |
| Housing | 4 | 8 | 12 |
| Troughs | 2 | 4 | 8 |
| Energy use | 8 | 10 | 15 units |
| Feature-kit slots | 4 | 6 | 3 |
The big barn is the clean capacity step: it doubles housing from four to eight while adding two kit slots. Deluxe reaches 12 animals and eight troughs, but its listed slot count drops to three. That odd value is important enough to verify in the live Early Access build before planning an expensive automation conversion; this guide reports the Wiki, not an assumed correction.
Coop upgrade table
Coops support chickens, roosters and rabbits. The construction costs and energy figures match the barn tiers, while capacity and trough counts differ.
| Stat | Coop | Big Coop | Deluxe Coop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coin cost | 84,000 | 120,000 | 240,000 |
| Materials | 20 Wood, 15 Rock, 15 Hay | 40 Wood, 25 Rock, 15 Hay | 70 Wood, 50 Rock, 15 Hay |
| Build steps | 10 | 20 | 30 |
| Housing | 6 | 12 | 24 |
| Troughs | 4 | 6 | 8 |
| Energy use | 8 | 10 | 15 units |
| Feature-kit slots | 4 | 6 | 3 |
The deluxe coop doubles big-coop housing, making it the strongest space upgrade on paper. It does not double troughs, and the same three-slot warning applies. Capacity also affects reproduction: the Wiki says births or hatching need free housing space, and an overfull building can cause an unsuccessful pregnancy if the player does not intervene.
Doors, outdoor time and resource quality
Barn and coop doors can be opened or closed. Closed doors keep animals inside, but the official Wiki warns that animals may be stranded outdoors at night if the doors are shut too soon. It also says raising animals in a closed environment may affect resource quality. The mammal page is more direct: outdoor time can improve daily resources, while animals kept indoors produce only the lowest-quality resource even if the animal itself has a higher quality.
That creates a real operating tradeoff. Closed buildings simplify containment; open access supports outdoor production quality. Air Conditioning protects animals from summer heat and winter cold, but the Wiki does not say it replaces outdoor-quality requirements.
Upgrade decision checklist
- Separate barn species from coop species before spending materials.
- Reserve free housing if breeding is part of the plan.
- Count required feature kits, not only animal slots. In the Wiki snapshot, Big has the most listed kit slots.
- Budget energy: each standard building uses eight units, big uses ten and deluxe uses fifteen, before adding feature-kit consumption.
- Place Silos and Water Towers inside a usable connection layout before installing Auto-Feeding.
- Keep doors open long enough for outdoor benefits, then make sure no animal remains outside at night.
For the complete resource chain, continue to the automation guide. For reproduction and offspring quality, use the breeding and quality guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Which animals belong in a barn or coop?
- The pre-Early-Access official Wiki lists cows, bulls and goats for barns; chickens, roosters and rabbits for coops. Recheck the live build before treating the roster as exhaustive.
- Is deluxe always better than big?
- Deluxe has the highest housing and trough capacity in the old Wiki table, but that table lists three feature-kit slots versus six on Big. Verify this in the current build before replacing a kit-heavy layout.
- Where do building blueprints come from?
- Barn and coop blueprints are sold at the Carpenter's Shop in the countryside, according to the official Wiki.
