The Ranchers co-op guide — online multiplayer for 1-4 players
The Ranchers supports online co-op for 1-4 players with cross-platform multiplayer across Windows, macOS and Linux — you invite up to three friends to your ranch. Host-save behaviour and guest progress rules are not yet officially documented.
What co-op is confirmed
Co-op is one of the best-documented parts of The Ranchers before launch. Three official sources agree:
- The Steam store page lists Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer, describes the game as being for 1-4 players, and says you can invite up to three friends to your ranch.
- The official website says: “Invite 1 to 3 players to join you in your Ranch online!” — friends can help develop the ranch, complete goals, or explore the world together.
- The June 12, 2026 launch announcement confirms that in Early Access you can “play together with your friends like never before.”
So the structure is clear: one player’s ranch, up to three online guests, from day one of Early Access on July 30, 2026.
Platforms and cross-play
The game ships on three platforms, all via Steam, and the cross-platform multiplayer flag on the store page covers play between them:
| Platform | Game available | Notes from official sources |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Yes | Steam; minimum specs list 16 GB RAM |
| macOS | Yes | Steam; Intel 4-core or Apple M1+ |
| Linux / SteamOS | Yes | Steam |
| Consoles | No | No console version announced |
| iOS / Android | Companion app only | Auction-market companion app, not the full game |
The Steam feature list also includes Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, Remote Play on TV and Family Sharing. LAN mode and split-screen are not listed anywhere official — assume online-only co-op unless that changes.
What you can do together
Official descriptions stay at the activity level rather than the rules level. Confirmed activities for a co-op session: developing the ranch together, completing goals, and exploring the open world — which, per the store page, includes markets, boutiques, car dealerships, parks and a casino. The launch announcement adds story quests and animal raising to the Early Access content, though it does not state how quest progress is shared between host and guests.
If you are hosting friends at launch, it is worth having the confirmed early loop clear in your head first — crops, workbench crafting, daily orders — which the beginner guide covers. Splitting utility work is a natural co-op division too: the contracts-versus-infrastructure decision in the automation guide affects the whole ranch, so agree on it as a group.
The auction market and companion app
The official website describes an online auction market where players sell resources to other players, accessible both in-game and from a companion application on iOS and Android. This is a genuine multiplayer economy layer beyond your 4-player ranch.
One caution: the Steam page says the Early Access build “closely mirrors the demo version,” and the Early Access description does not mention the auction market. Whether it is live at launch or arrives later in the roughly six-month Early Access period is not yet verified.
Open questions we will test at launch
None of the following is documented in any official source as of July 26, 2026:
- Host saves: whether the world save lives with the host only, and whether guests can continue a shared ranch when the host is offline
- Guest progress: whether character progress, money or inventory carries back to a guest’s own save
- Joining: invite flow, drop-in/drop-out mid-session, and whether Steam friends are required
- Scaling: whether orders, prices or seasons adjust for player count
These are exactly the questions the developer has not answered publicly, and any site claiming answers today is guessing. This page gets updated with firsthand-tested answers after the July 30 launch.
FAQ
- How many players does The Ranchers co-op support?
- 1-4 players. The official website phrases it as inviting 1 to 3 players to join your ranch online, so one host plus up to three guests.
- Is The Ranchers cross-platform?
- Yes — Cross-Platform Multiplayer is listed on the Steam feature list, covering the three supported platforms Windows, macOS and Linux/SteamOS. There are no console or mobile versions of the game itself.
- Does The Ranchers have LAN or split-screen co-op?
- Neither is listed on the Steam page. The confirmed mode is online co-op. Remote Play on TV is listed, but split-screen and LAN are not, so assume online-only until the developer says otherwise.
- Do guests keep their progress in The Ranchers co-op?
- Not yet verified. No official source documents how host saves or guest character progress work. We will test this at Early Access launch and update this page.
