Native build: what the official sources confirm

The official Ranchers wiki says the game has a native version for Linux, SteamOS and Steam Deck. It is downloaded automatically by Steam when the game is installed on those operating systems. The current Steam store also provides a SteamOS/Linux requirements section, so Linux is not being inferred solely from a third-party Proton report.

The wiki article was written during the alpha era and names version 0.6.28.171. Its setup principle is still useful, but its performance comments should not be treated as a benchmark for the July 2026 Early Access build. Recheck patch notes whenever the behavior differs from these steps.

Install and select the native version

1. Install The Ranchers through the normal Steam library on the Linux, SteamOS or Deck device.
2. Open Properties → Compatibility for the game.
3. Make sure “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” is unchecked.
4. Return to the library and allow any queued native update to finish.
5. Launch the game and confirm that Steam is not being forced to use a Windows compatibility layer.

Why this matters: forcing a Proton version tells Steam to prefer a Windows build path, while the official instructions are designed for the game’s native Linux executable. Do not copy an old Proton recipe before trying the developer’s native route.

Official cache-refresh workaround

The wiki documents a symptom where pressing the green Play button launches for a second and returns to the library. In that historical case, Steam had downloaded the Linux build but still cached the Windows ranchers.exe launch target.

Use the documented refresh sequence:

1. Open the game’s Steam settings and the Compatibility tab.
2. Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
3. Return to the normal library launch screen.
4. Open the Compatibility tab again.
5. Uncheck the same option.
6. Wait for the new update or file refresh that appears.
7. Launch again with the native option restored.

This is a targeted fix for that launch symptom, not a universal repair for crashes. If it does not match your symptom, first verify files, free space and the current patch instead of repeatedly toggling.

Deck expectations and settings

The official wiki states that full Deck optimization was not complete when that article was written. The current Steam listing checked for this guide does not show a Valve Steam Deck Verified rating. Therefore, this site can confirm a documented native route without promising a specific frame rate, battery duration, font size or suspend/resume result.

For a clean first test:

• use the native build before experimenting with Proton;
• begin at the Deck’s native display resolution;
• confirm every inventory and co-op menu can be reached with the controller;
• test sleep and resume before a long session;
• note the game version when reporting a performance problem.
